The iPad has enabled point-of-sale (POS) apps to become mobile. Most of these apps are compatible for the iPhone as well, but we’re of the opinion that looking through a long list of numbers and figures on a relatively tiny screen is not something we’ll enjoy. So we recommend that you use your iPad instead.
No matter what you sell, having the right POS system should be a key part of managing your business. The ideal POS app will help you to manage your operations efficiently, and make short work of daily sales tasks. With so many POS apps in the market, you may be overwhelmed and unsure of which one is best. Not to worry, we’ve picked out a few outstanding ones that can contribute greatly to your day-to-day operations.
Square is one of the pioneers of POS systems, and the Square Register has great functionality and design. But here’s the thing we really like about this app. Square has released a new hardware bundle called Business in a Box, which will literally turn the Square Register to a real cash register. The bundle comes with two Square Readers, an iPad stand ideal for a retail environment, and a cash drawer that can be controlled using the iPad. A more expensive version contains a thermal printer for printing receipts. Square Register is great value for money, and the bundle ensures that you don’t have to worry about compatibility issues.
2. PayPal Here
Online shoppers should be very familiar with PayPal. The iPad version, called PayPal Here, accepts payment by cash, credit card, and of course, PayPal. It can connect wirelessly to your cash register, and also enables you to scan items via barcode. When you register for this app, a free credit card reader will be sent to you. Overall, this app is hassle-free and simple to use; which makes it an especially good choice for small businesses who are new to POS systems.
3. Cashier Live
Cashier Live has a simple interface which allows you to create inventories and scan barcodes. The cool thing about Cashier Live is that you can send receipts to emails. This gives you an excuse to ask for your customers’ email addresses, without appearing too pushy. However, Cashier Live requires an active internet connection to function, something that most other POS apps do not need. This could be a problem if your shop or business venue does not have Wi-Fi.
GoPayment is an essential app for larger-scale businesses, as you can add up to 50 users in one account. It is also perfect for on-the-go salespeople, with the option to track the location of each transaction by leveraging on your iPad’s GPS system. GoPayment syncs with QuickBooks, an accounting software that helps you to organise your finances, as both apps are developed by Intuit.
The cutting edge technology offered by the iPad has opened up infinite possibilities for retailers to go mobile with their daily sales operations. No longer are they constrained to a restrictive counter; the sales process can now take place within the sales floor. Imagine going shopping without the long counter queues, where the sales staff actually goes up to you with an iPad to finalise the transaction. That is a shopping experience we can’t wait to go through.
