Daily Trick 28. Wikipedia Browser

Advertisements

I believe we all have ever used Wikipedia and perhaps we often use it. And usually, we will use our web browser to search the entry of Wikipedia, won't we?

But using our Mac, it is not necessary for us to open web browser just to look for the entry in Wikipedia. It's because we can use our Dictionary.app to browse through Wikipedia entries.

But initially, you will need to enable Wikipedia as one of your Dictionary sources. Here are the steps to do it:

  1. Open your Dictionary.app and go to its Preferences
  2. Inside you can see many sources for your Dictionary. You should choose the one labelled Wikipedia, tick it, and drag it to the first order
  3. After you've done this setting, you can type in your search term and the search result will be grabbed from Wikipedia

Of course with similar steps as above, you can also enable Thesaurus or other dictionaries as the source.

Don't forget: Command + 0
That allows you to look up your word in all available sources at once (i.e. in the dictionary, thesaurus, and Wikipedia simultaneously).

What I want to know is if there's a way to add other other search sources, like The Urban Dictionary, About.com or even imdb.com and flickr. Sometimes I know what the word means or who the person is, but I just want further clarification or an image. Being able to add other search sources would be fantastic!

Nice, I didn't know this. I would like to keep the dictionary as the first source, but I would like to search wikipedia at times. Is there a way to switch sources without changing the preferences? Like can I shuffle through sources?

Ha, never mind, now I feel dumb. All the options are right there on the bar...

Honestly, I've always been more of a fan of just putting the monitor to sleep than screen savers. Sure they look pretty awesome, but if you're sitting at your computer, are you really doing so with the screen saver on?Good luck for the dates. It has been some times since we last heard about the next tour. I hope they can run it accordingly now.tHla3KqaadJNFSIb
