Mac Tricks and Tips, Wallpapers and Applications for Mac Users

The Winners of UsingMac Contest 1

Advertisements

After long consideration and development time to put up all submissions into our new gallery, finally we can announce to our readers the winners of this contest.

1st Place. Biology

Artist: Myles O'Neill

I am astounded by the modifications and extra touches that he gives to his Mac. If not for the Dock he left there untouched, I can barely figure out that this is a screenshot of a Mac.

Big applause to Myles for winning licenses of Pixelmator, Layers, and Concentrate.

2nd Place. Custom Dock

Artist: Cameron Osborn

I like the way the icons are placed; they're not placed in the normal Dock. Instead, the icons are placed in a custom dock, like the title implies. What a creative modification.

And what I like the most is the simplicity and minimalistic atmosphere from the Desktop. Thumbs up to Cameron. Congrats Cameron! You've won 2 apps: Layers and Concentrate.

3rd Place. Fan Stack

Artist: Prakhar M.

From a single glance, perhaps you would be attracted to the modified stack icons.

However if you look more thoroughly, you would find out that he also modified the LED lights of active applications into three lights (default is one). This is the creative part of his desktop setup.

And with this, he won a copy of Concentrate.

Other Submissions

You can also see other 80 wonderful screenshots of Mac Desktop and photos of Mac Setup on our new gallery at gallery.usingmac.com under the category Mac Fanboy Collection.

We've also put up 200+ gorgeous wallpapers on the gallery.

We applied a queuing system to the gallery where upon clicking on the thumbnail, the lightbox view will not appear immediately. Instead, the image will be put on the process queue. You can view the image after the load is finished.

Have a nice time browsing!

Can we have some details on how the modifications were made?

Is there any way of knowing how "Biology" was done? Looks awesome.

diapointment

all that waiting, disappointing results...other than the biology setup, I see much better choices from the results. :(

Stephen

thank you for this creative contest. it would be nice, and instructional, to have a 'how to' on the desktop and mods. we can all learn from each other, and expand our creativity.

I really want to know all the apps that are used in the biology desktop! a whole separate article explaining all of those would be amazing. are any of them homebrew?

Myles O'Neill

Hey all, I'm Myles - the person who designed the Biology desktop. I am over the moon I won, I never expected it :) .

I've written a nice and long explanation of how I made the Biology here:

http://dreamsinvitro.wordpress.com/2009/10/17/creating-a-mad-biologists-desktop/

If you have any questions or want some help with it, just comment on that blog post and I'm more than happy to help. You are more than welcome to copy my design.

Also, in response to Erik, none of the apps are homebrew - I'm only a first year programming student so I'm still not quite up to that level. On the plus side, this makes it quite easy for you to replicate what I've done :) .

Hermann

Hey there, first of all thank you very much for your comment ! ))) So the shelfs are not the part of wallpaper. Could you give me a hint how did you make these shelfs too ! Many thnanks =)

Cameron Osborn

Your welcome! :) you can check out italkapple's video on how to do it. you'll need photoshop or pixelmator to do it. but pixelmator will work since there's the trial of it that's fully functional.
here's the links. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ga4TB1VPAk . And here's a link to the file needed to make the background. http://b1.s3.p.quickshareit.com/files/striped6b688.psd
