All About Apple Mac

Nowadays, I have been hunting for good mac applications to record screen of my Mac. And I found these five applications are good enough to do the task: ScreenFlow, SnapzProX, ScreenMimic, iShowU and Jing.

Their prices are varying. They also have their own uniqueness. Here are what I thought of them.

Jing

Price : $0.00 alias Free

Let's start from Jing.

With Jing, you can record video of your screen up to 5 minutes. The recorded video is in the swf format. The file size of the result is quite big so that it's not compatible for recording long video.

iShowU

Price : $20.00

In my opinion, iShowU has good user interface. You can easily customize your settings and save them as preset. And also there are some built-in presets to help you.

Feature that I like most of this screen recording: It can do instant recording, so we don't need to wait for the encoding to take place. And it has a reasonable price.

The demo is available but with a huge iShowU watermark on your recording.

Screen Mimic

Price : $65.00

The main advantage of this screen recorder is its ability to export movies as Adobe Flash SWF and Flash Video FLV format other than Quicktime MOV format.

The unique part of this application is the re-encoding feature. With this feature, you can have the second chance to encode again. This is especially useful for increasing/decreasing the frame rate and adjusting the mouse from the first encoding.

Demo of this applications is available for 15s recording.

Snapz Pro X

Price : $69.00

I remember when I first start my hunt on screen recorder, everybody says that I should try Snapz Pro X. It seems that this application is already so popular.

But there is one thing you need to take note, keystrokes Shift Command 3 will be used to invoke Snapz Pro X. And it's quite a long time needed for the encoding.

ScreenFlow

Price : $99.99

This is a newly built screen recorder for Mac OS X Leopard. So I've confidence that this screen recorder has been optimized for your Leopard.

After the encoding, the file is saved as ScreenFlow format. This file can be further exported to QuickTime Movie Format and interestingly, you can scale down the movie.

But yeah I know, the price is really high.

What's Your Decision?

So, have you decided which screen recorder application you will use? For additional information, I am currently using ScreenFlow, the most expensive one *ouch*.

I first used Snapz Pro X but when I discovered iShowU I began using it exclusively because the interface in iShowU was so much more user friendly than Snapz Pro X. However I have recently been using a demo of ScreenFlow and I really like the user friendliness and the editing capabilities. After having bought Snapz Pro X & iShowU........I am reluctant to purchase ScreenFlow.....mostly because of the high price but I also have 2 perfectly good apps.

iShowU and Snapz Pro X are probably the most popular choices, but I don't have any experience with either of them. I personally use Copernicus (http://osx.iusethis.com/search?q=copernicus}, which is free and, as far as I know, has no limits on movie length. It records in MOV format, but there is NO audio and it might take some getting used to. But, if your budget is exactly $0.00, it's the best solution out there in my opinion, but only if you can live without audio. If you're into making screencasts using these apps, I recommend using Mouseposé, which will allow you to do things such as putting a spotlight on your cursor and flashing the keystrokes you're hitting on the bottom of the video. This makes tutorials *much* easier to follow for your viewers. It costs around $15 and can be found at boinx.com.

Screenflow is really great for screencasts and whatnot. It records you from your iSight, as well as your screen, and then lets you edit everything after the recording has taken place. I was really impressed when I used it.

What about http://screencast-o-matic.com ? Free and Java based so no install. Nothing is easier to share online or export .mov... Course I'm a bit biased :)

I've used Snapz Pro for years. It works, but when I discovered iShowU I switched. It's more flexible and easier to use. Much cheaper too. But it's ScreenFlow all the way now. The built in editor makes it so easy to create much more polished products. Edit out the verbal stumbles, zoom in on a part of the screen, add effects, include external files, no problem. Also the ability to include iSight and external cameras provides a lot of extra flexibility. $99 seems expensive unless you spend a lot of time producing screencasts. But if you do, you'll bless ScreenFlow's developers each time you use it.

YouTubeRobot.com today announces YouTube Robot 2.0, a tool that enables you to download video from YouTube.com onto your PC, convert it to various formats to watch it when you are on the road on mobile devices like mobile phone, iPod, iPhone, Pocket PC, PSP, or Zune. YouTube Robot allows you to search for videos using keywords or browse video by category, author, channel, language, tags, etc. When you find something noteworthy, you can preview the video right in YouTube Robot and then download it onto the hard disk drive. The speed, at which you will be downloading, is very high: up to 5 times faster than other software when you download a single file and up to 4 times faster when you download multiple files at a time. Manual download is not the only option with YouTube Robot. You may as well schedule the download and conversion tasks to be executed automatically, even when you are not around. Downloading is followed by conversion to the format of your choice and uploading videos to a mobile device (if needed). For example, you can plug in iPod, select the video, go to bed, and when you wake up next morning, your iPod will be ready to play new YouTube videos.
