Clean Up Mac Keyboard

Dirty Keyboard

This is my first time experience in cleaning my Mac keyboard. This idea come in mind when I saw my super-dirty Mac keyboard laid in front of me. This image I took after unplug all the buttons:

No choice, I have to clean up my Mac Keyboard

Some of the buttons have additional part (and additional dirt). Make sure you know how to plug that kind of buttons correctly.

Prepare the Things

This includes screwdriver, brush, tissue paper, cleaner liquid and napkin,

Unplug all the Buttons

Make sure to place the screwdriver near the center of the button. And for longer button, such as spacebar and shift, it's better and safer to use hand.

Arranging Unplugged Button

This step may be skipped if you can remember all of the buttons' position. I don't have this confidence to bet my Mac keyboard on my intelligence.

Brush Down the Dust

It's recommended to place trash can to take care of the dust, if you don't want to sweep all the dust after finish cleaning up keyboard.

Wipe Out the Dirt with Cleaner Liquid

For more shiny effect, don't forget to put the cleaner liquid.

Jing..! Looks Clean and Shiny

But I still need to plug back all the buttons..

Plug Back All 109 Buttons

Before plugging the buttons, make sure all of them have been cleaned.

Finish! Look at the Result

Oh, I feel very satisfied with this.

Just put the whole keyboard in the top tray of your dishwasher upside down and wash on lowest time cycle with no detergent - it works nicely on my G5 mac keyboards from work - i also wait till the family have all had showers so that the water isn't too hot.

I trialled it on my own keyboard first to make sure it was ok.

Give the keyboards a good shake when done to get the excess water out and then stand it on end on a window sill for a week to dry out before using again.

The only issue is you need a spare to use for a week.
