I found this site useful, SilverMac, which provides us with .prefPane file to adjust your startup sound volume. This story was hot on Digg several months ago.

Hi, i find this very interested. i'm looking for something similar to modify the startup sound like the guy with his ibook. i looked into the system folder to find something that could be used for anstartup sound, but i didn't find it. How did you managed this my friend. Best regards, Pascal

i recently found an ingenious way to have a startup sound when you log in. in your acounts tab in system preferences, click on login items, then simply add the startup sound you want. it would work seamlessly if you have Play Sound to play it.
