Finder Shortcuts for Viewing

We often use Finder to browse through our files. Therefore, it's very important to know all viewing mode provided by your Mac Finder. Knowing this basic will be useful for you. Also, this will increase your productivity.

Finder can be opened by clicking on the Finder icon on the Dock.

Icon View (Command-1)

Short description : All files and folders are in the form of icons → Iconic Finder

These keystrokes will be useful for you :

  • Command-UpArrow : Go to parent folder; Up one level
  • Command-DownArrow : Explore inside highlighted folder; Go deeper
  • Command-O : Open highlighted folder in the same window
  • Command-Shift-O : Open highlighted folder by opening new window

List View (Command-2)

Short description : All files and folders, including their details, are displayed in one line → One-Liner Finder

These keys will come in handy :

  • Command-UpArrow : Go to parent folder; Up one level
  • Command-RightArrow : Expand selected items; Works on single or multiple items
  • Command-LeftArrow: Collapse selected items; Hide all the expanded items
  • UpArrow / DownArrow : Move the selection

View 3. Column View (Command-3)

Short description : Displays all items up to 3-levels. For example, Parents, Currents, and Children → Family Finder (so lame..)

And again, these shortcuts will come in handy :

  • RightArrow : Move to next level; Move up if it's already hit the last level
  • LeftArrow : Move to previous level
  • UpArrow / DownArrow : Move the highlighter
